Design a perforated or textured shade that fits your lamp

This tool builds lamp shades for pendant or table lamps and exports them as STL. Pick a silhouette: cylinder, cone, sphere slice, barrel, trumpet, egg or wavy. Add one of six hole patterns or one of eleven textures, then enter height, body diameter and wall thickness in millimetres.

Important: use LED bulbs only; PLA deforms with heat; PETG or ASA is recommended. Fittings are an E27 plate with a Ø40.5 mm hole, an E14 plate with a Ø28.5 mm hole, or a spider of a 6 mm ring and three arms. The plate prints on the bed and the body opens upward; flip the shade to hang it.

Free, no sign-up. Change the sizes in millimetres and download the STL.

What it is used for

  • Pendant light over a kitchen counter or dining table
  • Perforated night light casting patterns on the wall
  • Soft textured shade for a desk lamp
  • DIY lighting with a cord set and LED bulb

Printing tips

Orientation
Fitting plate on the bed, body opening upward. Spider arms also print on the bed, so no bridges are needed.
Layer height
0.2 mm layers. Diamond and honeycomb hole edges come out crisper at 0.16 mm.
Infill
Infill lands almost only in the plate; 2-3 walls and 20% infill are enough.
Supports
Not needed at most settings. Diamond holes have 45° edges; round and square holes over 8 mm print their top edge as a bridge. The panel warns past 45°.
Material
PETG or ASA is recommended; PLA can soften over time even with a warm LED bulb in a closed shade. White or natural filament spreads light best.

Tips

  • Leave at least 10 mm between bulb and wall; the panel checks it.
  • Past the hole count limit, holes are enlarged and a note appears.

Heat and bulb safety

Incandescent and halogen bulbs are not suitable for printed shades: PLA softens at about 55-60°C. LED bulbs run much cooler, but heat still builds up in a closed body, so combine PETG or ASA, a perforated pattern and space around the bulb.

  • LED bulbs only, ideally under 9 W
  • Material: PETG or ASA
  • At least 10 mm between bulb and wall

Holes, texture or vase mode?

Holes cast light onto walls and ceiling as a pattern; diamonds print cleanest because their edges are 45°. Textures soften the light without piercing the body. Vase mode works only without holes: the body is generated solid and the slicer prints a single-line spiral wall.

  • Light patterns: diamond, honeycomb or spiral slots
  • Soft, even light: flute or ripple texture
  • Fastest print: vase mode, single wall

Frequently asked questions

Which lamp holder does it fit?

The E27 plate has a Ø40.5 mm hole and the E14 plate a Ø28.5 mm hole, clamped by the threaded ring of the holder. Hole diameter can range from 20 to 60 mm; if the body is too narrow, the tool widens the fitting end.

Why does it print upside down?

The flat, wide fitting plate sticks well to the bed and the body opens up from it, so the spider arms and plate print without supports. Turn the shade over to hang it.

Why does the panel warn about bulb distance?

The tool measures the inner radius where the bulb is widest and warns below 10 mm; increase the body diameter or the fitting end ratio.
