Compose your own vase from form and texture

This tool combines a silhouette, a cross-section and a surface texture into a parametric vase and exports it as an STL. Enter height, body diameter and wall thickness in millimetres, pick a texture, and the model is computed in your browser so you can spin it and check.

The three controls are independent: the silhouette sets the side profile, the cross-section runs from triangle to octagon, and the texture is carved into that envelope. Adding twist rotates section and texture together. Because textures are carved inward, the wall never drops below the value you entered.

What it is used for

  • Table vase for dried flowers and pampas grass
  • Narrow-necked vase for a single stem
  • Decorative object for a shelf or mantelpiece
  • Memorial vase using the monument or column silhouette

Printing tips

Orientation
Print base down with the mouth up. Textures are carved inward, so no reverse overhangs appear on the side walls.
Layer height
0.2 mm captures the texture detail. On flutes and ripples, 0.24 mm still looks clean and shortens the print.
Infill
0% infill with 2-3 perimeters. The body is hollow so infill only lands in the floor; a 3 mm floor makes the vase heavier and more stable.
Supports
Not needed at most settings. The panel reports the steepest overhang; if it passes 45°, enable supports or reduce the mouth and bulge ratios.
Material
PLA shows texture most crisply and is fine for decorative use. Use PETG on a sunny windowsill and ASA outdoors. Silk PLA noticeably increases the way the texture catches light.

Tips

  • Texture depth can exceed wall thickness; the carve goes inward from the envelope and the wall is preserved.
  • More repeats around the circumference means thinner ribs; past 30 flutes on a 90 mm body they blur together with a 0.4 mm nozzle.

Vase mode (single wall) or solid walls?

Vase or spiral mode in a slicer prints the object as one continuous wall: it is fast, and with no infill or wall transitions the surface is unbroken. The catch is that the slicer ignores your wall thickness in this mode and prints a single line, so the part does not hold water.

  • Dried flowers and decor: vase mode, single wall
  • Use with water: normal mode, 3 perimeters, solid floor
  • Guaranteed watertight: vase mode plus a glass insert

How silhouette, section and texture combine

Among the fifteen silhouettes, cylinder, cone and trumpet are plain; barrel, egg, amphora, bottle, hourglass, double bulge, goblet, onion and wavy are curved; and monument, column and urn arrive with thick-walled, pedestalled presets. The bulge control strengthens or flattens the curve of any silhouette.

  • Easiest to print: cylinder or cone with plain or fluted texture
  • Most dramatic: amphora or goblet with twist above 200°
  • Memorial vase: monument, column or urn with a square pedestal

Frequently asked questions

Can I put water in the vase?

A PETG vase printed in normal mode with 3 perimeters and a solid floor does hold water in practice. Even so, dropping a glass or plastic bottle inside is the safest route.

The panel warns about overhangs past 45°. What now?

Reduce the mouth diameter percentage, lower the bulge, or shrink the body diameter. The steepest part of the silhouette responds to all three, and you can always print with supports instead.

Can the texture cut through the wall?

No. The texture is carved in from the outer envelope and the inner surface is offset by the same amount, so the wall never drops below your value. If the narrowest part of the silhouette forces a thinner wall, the panel says so.
