Design a woven cane wall planter for mint

This tool generates a wall-mounted planter with a Vienna cane pattern and exports it as STL. It has three parts: a cane sleeve, an inner pot for the soil and a one-piece hidden rail. Pick round, square or rectangular and set the size in millimetres.

As on a chair back, the cane panel sits recessed in a frame. Paired vertical and horizontal strands and single diagonals pass over and under each other, and the octagonal openings form between them. Open cane shows a dark inner pot through the openings, relief makes them blind pits, plain keeps only the recessed panel.

Free, no sign-up. Change the sizes in millimetres and download the STL.

What it is used for

  • Mint, basil or parsley by a kitchen window
  • A small herb corner on a balcony wall
  • Ivy or succulents in the bathroom
  • Dried flowers in the hallway

Printing tips

Orientation
Sleeve and inner pot upright, rail wall face down. Opening ceilings are short bridges; everything else is 45° or steeper.
Layer height
0.2 mm is fine; 0.16 mm gives smoother strand tops.
Infill
At least 4 walls and 5 bottom layers.
Supports
Not needed: the pot lip, grip tabs and rail slot are 45° chamfers.
Material
PETG indoors and on a balcony, ASA in full sun. PLA and wood-fill PLA creep with moisture and heat.

Tips

  • Print the sleeve light beige and the inner pot dark brown for the cane contrast.
  • If the set does not fit a 220 x 220 mm bed, print the parts separately.

Tips for growing mint

Mint wants plenty of water and half a day of sun, and its roots spread fast. The default rectangle holds about 1.8 L of soil, 128 mm deep, enough for one plant. The panel warns below 1.5 L.

  • East or west facing, 4 to 6 hours of light
  • Water when the topsoil dries, harvest often
  • Once a year divide the roots and refresh the soil

Watering, drainage and safe mounting

Drain holes cover the whole floor of the inner pot, and water collects in the sealed reservoir of the sleeve. The default reservoir holds about 270 mL, so do not give more per watering. The lowest opening is at least 6 mm above that water and the back has no holes, so nothing drips on the wall.

Screw the single rail level into wall plugs; the countersunk holes are 0.5 mm wider than the screw. Rest the 45° slot on the back of the sleeve on the rail and lower it; the weight pulls the planter towards the wall. A full planter weighs about 2.8 kg, so avoid drywall.

  • The rail top sits about 5 mm below the rim
  • 2 mm of side play, no other alignment needed
  • The panel warns above 4 kg

Frequently asked questions

Why does it not leak with open cane?

The soil sits in a solid-walled inner pot that drains only into the sealed reservoir, and the openings start above it.

Can I use PLA?

Not recommended; wet soil and sun soften it. Use PETG or ASA.

Can it hang on drywall?

No. Use wall plugs in brick or concrete.
