A battery organizer sized to your cells

This tool generates a battery box with pockets cut for the battery type you choose and exports it as an STL. Enter the battery type, rows, columns, pocket depth and hole clearance, and the model is built in your browser.

Pocket sizes come from real battery dimensions plus clearance, so cells neither jam nor tip over. Write on the label strip to keep charged and flat cells apart, or switch on the Gridfinity base to drop the organizer into a drawer plate.

Free, no sign-up. Change the sizes in millimetres and download the STL.

What it is used for

  • Separating charged and flat rechargeable AA and AAA cells
  • Storing 18650 and 21700 cells for torches and battery packs
  • Keeping spare CR2032 coin cells for remotes and sensors
  • Holding 9V batteries for smoke alarms and meters
  • A battery compartment in a Gridfinity drawer

Printing tips

Orientation
Print base down; the pockets open upward.
Layer height
0.2 mm layers are enough. A 0.6 mm chamfer at each pocket mouth guides the cell in.
Infill
15% infill, 2 perimeters. The thin walls between pockets are filled by perimeters anyway.
Supports
None. With the Gridfinity base on, short bridges form where cell corners meet.
Material
PLA works. If lithium cells are kept somewhere warm, use PETG and keep the box away from heat sources.

Tips

  • Print a small 2x2 test first and tune the clearance to your printer.
  • Wrapped 18650 cells can reach 18.6 mm; set the clearance to 0.6 mm.
  • Leaving at least 4 mm of the cell above the rim makes it easy to grab.

Battery sizes used

The pocket diameter is the largest battery dimension plus the hole clearance. The default 0.5 mm lets cells slide in on most printers without rattling.

  • AA: Ø14.5 x 50.5 mm, 25 mm pocket
  • AAA: Ø10.5 x 44.5 mm, 22 mm pocket
  • 18650: Ø18.5 x 65 mm, 21700: Ø21.5 x 70 mm
  • 9V: 26.5 x 17.5 x 48.5 mm rectangular pocket
  • CR2032: Ø20 x 3.2 mm, lying flat

Gridfinity base

With this option on, the outer size is rounded up to whole 42 mm cells and the standard Gridfinity profile is added underneath. The organizer then sits in a Gridfinity baseplate like any other bin. Pockets start above the base, so the cell count stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

The pockets are too tight or too loose. What should I change?

Adjust the hole clearance in 0.1 mm steps: increase it if cells jam, reduce it if they rattle.

How do I get coin cells out?

CR2032 pockets are 2.2 mm deep, so the cell stands 1 mm proud. Press one edge with a fingernail and it tips up.

Can I add a lid?

This template makes an open tray. For a lid, set the lidded box template to the outer size of the organizer.
