A one-piece clip that seals coffee and snack bags

This tool generates a one-piece clip that closes the top of a bag and exports it as STL. Enter a length between 60 and 200 mm, plus jaw thickness, clip width and spring thickness in millimetres. The two jaws join through a spring loop at one end; the whole part prints flat and needs no assembly.

With the hook and catch, the jaws print open; pinch the bag, press the upper jaw down and the catch at the tip grabs it. With the spring U, the jaws print almost closed with a 0.5 mm tip gap, the bag slides in from the chamfered tips and the spring holds it. The panel estimates spring strain as a percentage.

What it is used for

  • Sealing coffee, crisps and nut bags
  • Keeping flour, sugar and pasta packs tidy
  • Labelled clips for freezer bags
  • 160 mm or longer for pet food sacks

Printing tips

Orientation
Print flat: the clip profile on the bed, width going up. Spring loop, jaws and catch all form in one plane, with no supports.
Layer height
0.2 mm layers; the 0.8 mm teeth blur above 0.28 mm.
Infill
100% infill or 4 walls. The part is thin, so it prints almost entirely as walls anyway.
Supports
Not needed. The whole shape is a flat profile extruded upward.
Material
PETG is the safest choice for the spring. PLA works when strain stays under 1.5% and may snap above it. TPU will not hold the lock.

Tips

  • If the lock is stiff, thin the spring by 0.2 mm or lengthen the clip.
  • If the catch slips, add 0.5 mm jaw thickness.

PLA or PETG: why do springs break?

The spring loop bends every time the clip closes. The panel spreads that bend along the loop to estimate surface strain; a thicker spring or shorter clip raises it. PLA starts to crack around 2%, so the tool warns above 1.5%, while PETG handles it thousands of times.

  • Under 1.5%: PLA works, PETG lasts longer
  • Over 1.5%: use PETG or thin the spring
  • Short clip (60-80 mm): thin spring, 1.2-1.6 mm

Hook and catch or spring U?

The hook and catch clamps the bag firmly and does not open by itself; push the tab at the tip outward to release it. The spring U has no lock: it goes on and off with one hand, but a very thick fold can push the spring open. Toothed jaws stop the bag from slipping with either type.

  • Pack you open often: spring U
  • Pack that stays closed for weeks: hook and catch
  • Slippery foil bag: toothed jaws on

Frequently asked questions

Does the clip make the bag airtight?

Fold the top of the bag once or twice and clip it, and in practice no air gets in. A single layer may leak slightly; toothed jaws reduce that.

Does it need assembly after printing?

No. The clip prints as one piece and works straight off the bed; on the hook and catch type the slope on the catch guides the upper jaw.

Can I print a very long clip?

Up to 200 mm. A long clip strains the spring less but the jaw middle can flex; above 150 mm use a 5 mm jaw thickness.
