Design a patterned coaster that holds the water

This tool generates coasters for tables and side tables and exports them as STL. Choose a circle, square or hexagon and enter diameter, base thickness and rim lip height in millimetres. A sunflower spiral, radial, honeycomb, square, groove or hole ring pattern is added to the top as relief or engraving.

The pattern stays on the surface and the coaster is never drilled through, so water running down a glass collects inside the 3 mm rim and does not reach the table. Optionally a separate set holder is added that stores several coasters stacked; its inner size is exactly 1 mm larger than the coaster.

What it is used for

  • Protecting the table from condensation on cold drinks
  • A patterned set for coffee mugs and tea glasses
  • A gift set with its own holder
  • Matching coasters for cafe and office tables

Printing tips

Orientation
Prints bottom down; the rim and the relief face up. The set holder is a separate part printed alongside, base down.
Layer height
0.2 mm layers. Pick a relief depth that is a multiple of 0.2 mm (0.8 or 1.0 mm) for clean edges.
Infill
20% infill with 3 top and 3 bottom layers. The top must be solid so it holds water.
Supports
Not needed. The anti-slip cord groove has a short 3.2 mm bridge as its ceiling.
Material
PLA, PETG or two-colour PLA with a filament swap. PETG copes better with hot mugs.

Tips

  • To print the relief in a second colour, add a filament change at the layer where the relief starts.
  • The pierced option does not hold water; use it only under a hot teapot.

Relief, engraved or pierced

With relief the pattern cells rise from the base, the glass rests on their tops and water stays between them. With engraving the cells are sunk into the base; depth is limited so at least 1.2 mm of base remains. The pierced option cuts the cells all the way through, and the panel warns that it will leak.

  • Relief and engrave depth 0.4-1.5 mm
  • Rim lip 0-3 mm high and 3 mm wide
  • Spiral and radial patterns keep a flat hub in the centre

Set holder size

The holder inside is the coaster outline grown by 0.5 mm on every side, that is diameter plus 1 mm. Its height is the coaster count times coaster thickness plus 4 mm. A front window 45% of the coaster width starts above the bottom coaster, so you can grip and lift them out.

Frequently asked questions

Which diameter should I use?

90-100 mm suits standard glasses and mugs. Choose 110-120 mm for mugs with a wide base.

The coaster slides on the table. What can I do?

Turn on the anti-slip cord groove. Press a Ø3 mm silicone cord or a thin bead of liquid silicone into the groove underneath and the coaster stays put.

How is the hexagon size measured?

For the hexagon the size is the distance between two opposite flat sides. Corner to corner is about 1.15 times larger.
