Make a paper towel holder sized to your roll

This tool builds an upright countertop stand for a paper towel roll, or a two bracket holder screwed to a wall or under a wall cabinet, and exports it as STL. Enter the roll width, roll diameter and core inner diameter in millimetres; the rod spins freely in the core with at least 3 mm clearance.

Rolls are usually 230 to 280 mm wide, and an upright stand is taller than a 250 mm print height. So the rod is printed in separate pieces joined with a pin and a set tolerance; every part fits a 220 x 220 x 250 mm bed. The countertop base can be hexagonal or round, with a honeycomb, hole, radial or spiral pattern on top.

What it is used for

  • Movable paper towel stand on a kitchen counter
  • Under-cabinet holder that keeps the counter clear
  • Shop roll on a workshop or garage wall
  • Spare roll in a laundry room

Printing tips

Orientation
Print the base flat and the rod pieces upright. Print wall and under-cabinet brackets lying flat with the profile on the bed; screw holes are horizontal teardrops.
Layer height
0.2 mm layers.
Infill
40 percent or more for the base, 20 percent for the rod and brackets.
Supports
Not needed. Pin holes end in a 45° cone and the rod tip is chamfered.
Material
PLA or PETG. PETG lasts longer in a wet kitchen.

Tips

  • If a pin feels loose, add a drop of glue or reduce the tolerance by 0.1 mm.
  • Stick felt pads under the base so the stand does not slide when tearing a sheet.

Countertop, wall or under cabinet?

The countertop stand moves around and needs no drilling; a base wider than the roll across its flats, with its ballast cavity filled with sand or steel shot, makes tipping much less likely. In the wall type two brackets are screwed to the wall, the rod journals drop into slots from above. Under a cabinet, each journal enters through a side L opening and drops into its seat.

  • Rented home or movable: countertop stand
  • Free wall space: wall brackets
  • Clear counter: under cabinet

How do I measure the roll and core?

Measure the roll width with a ruler and the core inner diameter with calipers; most cores are 38 to 45 mm inside. The tool makes the rod 4 mm thinner than the core. Roll diameter sets how far the roll sits from the wall or cabinet.

  • Standard kitchen roll: width 280 mm, core 42 mm
  • Small roll: width 230 mm, core 40 mm
  • Industrial roll: core 50 mm

Frequently asked questions

Why is the rod in more than one piece?

For a 280 mm roll the rod is taller than a 250 mm print height. The tool splits it into equal pieces joined with a pin, and each piece fits the bed.

Will the base be heavy enough?

A light stand is never tip proof. A 180 mm hexagonal base with a full roll and a sand filled ballast cavity tips at about 2 N of sideways pull at the top of the roll; steel shot raises that. Tear sheets downwards or hold the stand with your other hand.

How do I space the brackets?

Use the inner face distance from the panel note: roll width plus 6 mm.
