Phone stand: dial in the viewing angle and case thickness

This page opens the DrawSTL phone stand template: a parametric desk stand that leans the phone against an angled back rest with a front lip to hold it, sized in millimetres and downloaded as a print-ready STL. You set the angle, the slot the phone drops into, the stand width and the lip height.

The phone thickness parameter is the slot opening, case included, so measure your phone with the case on. The cable option cuts a notch in the lip and a channel through the base, letting a charging cable pass underneath while the phone stays fully seated.

What it is used for

  • Watching video and taking video calls at a desk
  • Following a recipe in the kitchen or a drawing in the workshop
  • A wired charging station on a nightstand
  • Holding a phone steady for product photos and locked-off video
  • A wide version for a tablet or small e-reader

Printing tips

Orientation
The stand is generated in its working position with the base on the bed. No rotation needed; the back rest is steep enough that the sloped faces print support free.
Layer height
0.2 mm. Drop to 0.16 mm if you want a smoother visible surface.
Infill
15-20% is plenty. The base and back rest are built 5 mm thick, so the walls carry the load.
Supports
None. Because the angle cannot go below 50 degrees, the underside of the back rest stays within a printable slope.
Material
PLA is sufficient and the most dimensionally stable choice. Use PETG or ASA for a car or a sunny windowsill, since PLA softens in heat.

Tips

  • A thin rubber pad or a few silicone dots under the base stops it sliding completely.
  • Measure the phone with its case on a caliper and add 0.5 mm when setting the slot.
  • Keep the lip shorter than the bezel at the bottom of your phone, otherwise it covers part of the screen.

Choosing the angle and lip height

The angle sets how far the phone leans back, which directly affects viewing comfort. Seated at a desk, 65 to 75 degrees keeps the screen nearly upright and easy on the neck; for video or a standing bench, a reclined 55 to 60 degrees feels better.

The lip is the front ledge that stops the phone tipping forward. For most phones 8 to 10 mm grips well without covering the screen. Heavy devices like tablets are safer with 15 to 18 mm, but the taller the lip, the more of the bottom edge it hides.

  • 50-58 degrees: reclined, good for video and tablets
  • 60-68 degrees: balanced default for general desk use
  • 70-80 degrees: upright, best for video calls and notifications
  • Lip of 8-10 mm for phones, 15-18 mm for tablets

The cable pass-through and charging

With the cable option on, the stand gets a notch in the front lip and a channel through the base to the back. The cable exits behind the stand, so the phone seats fully and nothing pushes it forward. The notch caps at 14 mm.

Most USB-C and Lightning cables pass through comfortably, but a thick rigid case can leave the connector body resting against the lip. Adding 1 to 2 mm to the phone thickness makes room for it.

Frequently asked questions

Should the phone thickness include the case?

Yes. That value is the slot opening the phone drops into, case and all. Measure the cased thickness and add 0.5 mm.

What if the stand slides on my desk?

Stick a thin rubber pad or silicone dots under the base. The stand is light, so surface friction is usually all that is missing.

Can I use it for a tablet?

Yes. Raise the width to 120-200 mm, set the lip to 15-18 mm and bring the angle near 55 degrees. For heavy tablets, 25% infill stiffens the body.

Does it hold a phone in landscape?

It does. The slot runs the full stand width, so the phone can sit either way up as long as the stand is narrower than the phone is long.

Is it suitable for a car?

It is designed for a desk and has no vehicle mounting. For a car, print it in PETG or ASA rather than PLA, which deforms at cabin temperatures.
